The Vaud gymnasium admission exam: who sits it, which papers, what pass mark

'Gymnasium registration Vaud', 'gymnasium admission exam Lausanne': these searches come back every autumn, and they almost always hide the same confusion. Many parents think every pupil must sit an exam to enter gymnasium. That is not the case, and the difference comes down to a single document: the compulsory-school leaving certificate.

This guide sets out the rules as the canton publishes them: who is concerned by the admission exam, which papers it includes, how the pass mark is calculated, and the calendar of the 2027 session. Then it explains how to prepare seriously, without cramming.

01Who must sit the admission exam, and who is exempt

Let us start with those who do not need it, because they are the majority. A pupil who finishes Year 11 in the pre-gymnasium track in a Vaud public school and obtains the certificate is admitted by right to the school of maturity. Likewise, the VP certificate opens the general-culture school by right. For these families, the exam question does not arise: the point is to hold the VP through to the certificate.

The admission exam is for candidates who do not hold the required certificate, having not completed compulsory schooling in a Swiss public school. In practice, these are most often pupils from private schools, pupils educated abroad or in another system, or young people whose path does not lead to the expected certificate.

For the 2027 session, the canton sets precise conditions: be born between 1 July 2009 and 30 June 2014, have a legal representative domiciled in the canton of Vaud, never have attended a Vaud gymnasium, and not be following, during the current year, a programme giving access to gymnasium. A candidate who does not meet these conditions must enquire directly with the Directorate General for Post-Compulsory Education.

A useful clarification: the exam gives access to the school of maturity and the general-culture school. For the commerce school and the integrated vocational maturity, the procedure is different and goes through the vocational training office.

02The papers: three subjects, all written

The format is the same for both schools. Three subjects are compulsory: French, English and mathematics. All papers are written; there is no oral.

Options are added to these three subjects. For the general-culture school, German may be presented as an option. For the school of maturity, the candidate may present German, Italian (standard or option) or Latin, depending on the profile aimed at.

Each paper lasts three hours. According to the candidate information published by the canton, papers take place in the afternoon from Monday to Thursday, and in the morning on Friday. Three hours of writing per subject is long for a 15-year-old: managing time and energy is part of what is trained.

One point to check every year: the exact list of compulsory and optional subjects has varied from one session to another in the canton's documents. The indications above are those published for the 2027 session; the reference remains the official page at the time of registration.

03The pass mark: how success is calculated

Marks range from 6, the best, to 1, the worst, with half-points. A mark of 4 is the lower limit of sufficient. The pass rule, as the canton states it, consists of two conditions that must both be met.

• The total of the exam marks must be at least equal to 4 points times the number of marks.
• No mark may equal 1.

A worked example

Take a candidate presenting the three compulsory subjects, with no option. There are three marks, so the total must reach 3 times 4, that is 12 points. A candidate who obtains 5 in French, 3.5 in English and 3.5 in mathematics totals 12: they pass, despite two insufficient marks, because compensation applies and no mark is a 1.

Conversely, a candidate who obtains 4.5 in French, 4 in English and 3 in mathematics totals 11.5: they fail, by half a point, even though two of their marks are sufficient. And a candidate at 6, 5 and 1 fails whatever the total, because of the mark of 1.

Two practical lessons. First, compensation exists: a strong subject can carry a weak one. Second, it has an absolute limit: a subject completely abandoned, marked 1, closes the door. The strategy is therefore not to bet everything on strengths, but to secure a base everywhere and aim for a 5 where possible.

04The 2027 calendar: everything is decided four months ahead

For the 2027 session, the canton has set the registration deadline at 31 January 2027. The papers take place from 24 to 28 May 2027, at the Gymnase de Morges, avenue de Marcelin 33.

This four-month gap between registration and papers traps families every year: the exam is discovered in March, and the deadline has passed. For a child in private school aiming at public gymnasium, the decision is therefore taken in the autumn, not in the spring.

The canton publishes examples of admission exams from previous sessions. This is the reference resource for discovering the real format of the papers, and the basis of any serious training.

05How to prepare, and from when

Three written three-hour papers, a pass mark that requires a base in each subject: preparation is planned over the year, not over the Easter holidays.

• September to December: take stock subject by subject, from an official example sat under real conditions. Identify the weakest subject, the one threatening the total, and start with it.
• January: register before the 31st. Check the conditions and the options chosen.
• February to April: regular work on the required concepts, with timed practice to tame the three hours.
• May: ease off, review methods, sleep. The papers from 24 to 28 May are won on what was built before.

06Four frequent family mistakes

• Believing a VP pupil must sit the exam. No: the VP certificate gives access by right.
• Discovering the registration deadline in March. It is set at 31 January.
• Preparing only the strong subject. The pass rule rewards a base in every subject, and punishes a mark of 1.
• Underestimating the length. Three hours of writing per paper is a format to be trained, not just content to be learned.

07The mock exam: measuring the total before the day

The pass rule is arithmetic: it can be measured. That is one of the strengths of our support: having the pupil sit, several times during the year, a mock exam under real conditions, three hours, official format, then correcting it and calculating the total as the jury will.

The result is not one more mark: it is the answer to the only question that counts. Does the total reach 12? Which subject drags it down? Is any mark close to 1? Done from the autumn, the mock exam turns the May deadline into a numerical goal.

08How we support candidates

Our gymnasium admission preparation programme runs from September to the papers: initial assessment subject by subject, regular sessions on the required concepts, format training and corrected mock exams. It is for private-school pupils, pupils arriving in the canton and all those for whom the exam is the necessary route.

What can be worked on is the total, subject by subject, and on a half-point scale, that is often where everything is decided.
