Eight gymnasiums within reach of Lausanne

A Lausanne student has, by metro or train, eight public gymnasiums within reach: La Cité, Beaulieu, Bugnon and Auguste-Piccard in Lausanne itself, Chamblandes in Pully, then Renens, Bussigny and Crissier in the wider area. No other region of the canton offers such density. It is a real advantage, but it has a counterpart: the question is not only whether your child will get into gymnasium, it is which school, with which option, and with what chance of lasting three years there.

Every establishment offers the école de maturité, three years, and most the école de culture générale, three years plus one for the specialised maturité. Direct admission depends on the certificate obtained at the end of the 11th year; without direct access, the entrance exam is written only, in French, English and maths, three hours per paper, and is passed if the total of marks reaches at least four times their number with no mark equal to 1.

Everything turns on three moments many Lausanne families discover too late. In the 8th year, the ECR in French, maths and German each count for 30 % of the annual average in their subject: it is on those averages that orientation into the voie prégymnasiale or the voie générale is decided. Access to VP requires 46.5 points in the main group and 15 in the restricted group, against 40 and 12 for simple promotion. More than six points therefore separate passing the year from obtaining VP.

From the 9th to the 11th year, promotion requires 44 points across eleven subjects and 16 across the four fundamental ones, French, maths, German and the option. In the voie générale, French, maths and German are followed at two levels, and moving from level 1 to level 2 is obtained from an average of 5.5, at the end of each semester. The January report is therefore a real deadline, not a dress rehearsal.

At the end of the 11th year, the regime changes entirely. The cantonal examinations cover four subjects, English joining the other three, they include an oral, and they carry 20 % of the final mark. A parent who lived through the 8th-year ECR and expects the same mechanism is wrong three times over: on the subjects, on the weight, and on the oral, which the 8th year does not have.

What this changes for academic support in Lausanne

The practical consequence is simple: the year a student most needs a tutor is not always the year their marks drop. It is the year a decision is taken. An 8th-year student at 4.4 in maths is safe for promotion, but more than two points from VP. A 10th-year student at 4 across the board is promoted, but will never move from level 1 to level 2 without targeted work over a single semester.

That is why, at the Lausanne centre, every programme begins by placing the student on this calendar, not by redoing the week’s exercises. The free initial assessment says which decision is at stake this year and what numerical gap separates it from the student. The teacher is then chosen for the subject concerned, a specialist in their discipline rather than a generalist, and you receive a written report after every session.

Placed in VG: the bridges to gymnasium exist, and they can be calculated

Being placed in the voie générale at the end of the 8th year is not a closed door, and it is one of the things we repeat most often to Lausanne families. Three routes then lead to gymnasium or the école de culture générale, each with its own numerical conditions. Moving to VP without repeating requires level 2 in the three fundamental subjects, a specific option, and 50.5 points in the main group for 19 in the restricted group; by repeating, the thresholds fall to 46.5 and 15.

After the 11th year, raccordement 1 allows the voie générale certificate to be obtained with better levels, on a sliding scale of 12 to 15 points depending on the levels already reached, with a half-point tolerance. Raccordement 2 goes further: it awards the voie prégymnasiale certificate, hence direct access to gymnasium, provided the three subjects are at level 2 and 46.5 points are reached for 15. Finally, the école de culture générale opens to VG students from 13.5 points with three level 2s, or 14.5 with two.

These figures have a concrete consequence for a Lausanne student: with eight gymnasiums within reach, the question of a bridge deserves to be asked from the 9th year, not at the end of the 11th. One semester is sometimes enough to move a subject from level 1 to level 2, and that is precisely the kind of objective, short, numerical, dated, on which a tutor makes the difference. Thresholds and procedures may change from one year to the next; if a specific situation is unclear, the school management is the authority.
