03 · By level
Support adapted to every stage
In Vevey as in Lausanne, the content follows the Vaud curriculum (PER) and adjusts to your child’s actual level, defined at the assessment.
Primary (from 5P)
First words, simple sentences, listening comprehension: German enters the Vaud curriculum in 5P. At this stage everything is about enjoyment and ear; a child blocked early develops a rejection that is hard to undo. We build confidence before grammar.
8P, the orientation year
Declensions, word order, expanded basic vocabulary, reading and listening comprehension. German is the third subject of the 8P ECR, with its audio part, and its average counts for VP/VG orientation. It is often the subject that loses the most tenths.
Lower secondary (Years 9 to 11)
Structured grammar, cases, past tenses, written and oral expression. In the VG, German is one of the three levelled subjects: moving up to level 2 requires a solid grammatical base. We prepare the end-of-Year-11 exams and level changes.
Gymnasium
Authentic texts, literature, argued expression, preparation for certifications. German remains a core subject at the maturity, and a key for studies and employment in Switzerland. We work on fluency as much as precision.

Does German really count for VP/VG orientation?
As much as maths and French: it is the third subject of the restricted group whose total must reach 15 points for the VP, and the third test of the 8P ECR. It is often the subject that costs French-speaking families the most tenths.
My child is at VG level 1 in German: how to move to level 2?
The move happens with an average of 5.5, or 5 on recommendation, mid-year or at year-end. In German, tenths are gained mainly on basic grammar (cases, word order) and listening comprehension, which we work on in a targeted way.
How to prepare the audio part of the German ECR?
Through regular, guided exposure to the spoken language: listening to extracts in the exam format, spotting keywords, practising answers under time pressure. The canton's official example, with its audio files, is the basis of our mock exams.
